Holy fuck!
Sheâd set fire to his arm! Was she fucking insane? What did she say? Cauterize the wound? Fuck that! If being cauterized felt like this, then in future she could blow it out of her ass, Nick thought. As much as having his hand sliced off at the wrist hurt like hell, being set ablaze by the woman he thought he might love easily topped that.
But the stuff she rubbed on him after the brutal act eased the white-hot bolts of pain a little, and then she wrapped the wound with what looked like clean bandages. Where the hell did she get those? Had he passed out back there for a while?
Probably.
He couldn't remember much after his encounter with Half Head at the camp. He just remembered running down the dirt track, trying to get back to the Corolla. That and the pain. There had been that fence, the forest, and then... of course, the cabin! Maggie must have found some leftover supplies.
Thank God.
Wait, what the fuck had he done with his hand?
The detached hand had become a trophy, almost symbolic. As long as it was in his possession he felt stronger, somehow more complete, as ironic as that might be. But if he lost it, he knew it would be all over.
There it was, lying palm-up on the floor beside him. Out of the corner of his eye, he could make out the too-white skin against the grimy background of the floor. At that moment it looked so strange and alien to him he found it hard to believe it had ever been attached to his body at all, that his very own blood had kept it functioning.
The fingers were already beginning to curl. He noted with something close to amusement that the middle finger had curled a lot more than the others. His own hand was giving him the finger. What did they call it when that happened? Muscle atrophy? The early stages of rigor mortis?
Did it matter?
He could feel Maggie hugging him, wrapping her bare arms tenderly around his neck. It felt so good. He could smell her skin and hair, and for the briefest time he forgot that the last hour or so ever happened. They could still be in the tent, curled around each other in a serene post coital embrace.
The memory made him glad to still be alive.
âI love you, baby,â he said, feeling the situation called for something short, yet profound and life-affirming.
âI love you, too,â Maggie replied through the tears beginning to roll down her face.
âHey, keep it together, sweet stuff,â said Nick softly. âDon't freak out on me now. We'll make a plan and we'll be outta here soon. Thatâs a promise from me to you. Hey, I'm parched, where's that soda you gave me earlier?â
The soda lay on the floor next to them. Maggie disengaged her arms and handed Nick the can. He took a few swallows, then handed it back. âYou, too. You gotta keep your strength up.â
